The School for Husbands ( L’école des maris) premiered in 1661 in Paris, 1 year before The School for Wives. La Critique is a one-act prose play about two women who have just seen The School for Wives, and both decide that some women will like it and others will not (as most theater goes). Audiences were extremely critical of the controversial nature of The School for Wives, so in response, Molière wrote La Critique de L’école des femmes ( The Critique of The School for Wives) in 1663, which premiered at the Palais Royal Theater. Molière originated the role of Arnolphe when the play premiered at the Palais Royal theater in December 1662 for Phillipe I, Duke of Orléans, brother of King Louis XIV. The School for Wives was the first play that Molière wrote in rhymed verse. ![]()
