When Maria goes into the living room to tell her mother what happened, she is already wearing the ring Maria had dropped it on the counter. After the children have gone through an entire family’s worth of tamales, there is still no sign of the ring. The only way to get it back is to eat ALL the tamales until they find it. So she and her cousins sneak downstairs to try and find it, but it isn’t long before Maria realizes she must have dropped the ring in the tamales. Once Maria is done making tamales and goes upstairs with the other cousins, she realizes she doesn’t know what happened to the ring. Maria tries it on, admiring it while her mother leaves the kitchen to go take care of something else. Summary: On Christmas Eve, Maria is helping her mother make tamales when her mother takes off her ring and leaves it on the counter.
